About me
My name is Marcos, and “Roble y Nogal” (Spanish for oak and walnut) is where I display my work. I do not buy pieces from anyone else, nor do I run a factory with cheap labour. Everything you see on my website and in my shop has been designed and handcrafted by me and me alone. I start off with unique woods that I source from around the world. From raw planks and logs to the finished piece, through hours of painstaking and meticulous hand craft. I work with Wood because I find it a special material for which I have a great deal of respect.
I started off by making wooden cutting boards. I enjoy cooking and wanted to have a large, well made wooden cutting board. It was something useful and which I could build with my first woodworking machinery and tools.
My cutting boards started to evolve, and I soon began to get ideas for more artistic work. Every now and then I would get my hands on a piece of wood so outstanding, that I didn’t have the heart to cut, so I made a couple of wall sculptures with these pieces of wood framed. I liked the concept and created more and more wood sculptures, which to this date is what I most enjoy making. Each one of them has a unique serial number and signed certificate of authenticity, as would any painting you would buy from an artist to hang on your wall.
Up to this point, I was self taught and learned by trial and error (a lot of error). I was eager to try woodturning, but it seemed like a world of its own, so I decided to get in touch with a master woodturner who became my mentor. More than teaching me the basics, he transmitted his passion for the lathe, his artistic vision and the patience required for this discipline of woodworking.
So here I am, either in my workshop surrounded by Wood and machines, wondering what to make next, or in my shop trying to get my work broadcast.
Recently a Spanish TV channel visited me in my workshop and filmed me working a bit. You can see the whole sequence here:
